What does Alternaleaf do?

Alternaleaf is an education and advocacy platform designed to empower patients, by matching you with a specialist to determine whether medicinal cannabis alone or in conjunction with other therapies is a clinically appropriate option. We also offer a free service to discuss eligibility and trialling medical cannabis with your regular GP .

How quickly can I get an appointment with an Alternaleaf doctor?

It takes less than 5 minutes to complete our online process, and get an instant booking with one of our doctors. Please note that in order to confirm the appointment you have scheduled, you need to complete our online Pre-Consult, otherwise the clinic won't be able to hold your spot.

Are the consultations via telehealth or face to face?

All appointments are conducted via a telehealth video/phone call to ensure convenience and safety during COVID.

Do I need a referral to be seen by an Alternaleaf doctor?

No, you do not need a referral from your regular GP. Alternaleaf doctors are practising GPs with extensive experience prescribing medical cannabis.

How long does it take to receive my medication?

After your initial consultation, you will have your medication delivered to you within a few days. The medication is delivered to your home, or you can opt to receive at a pharmacy near you.

Am I eligible for medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis has been prescribed for over 30 chronic conditions. If you have trialled a conventional medicine without success, you could evaluate medical cannabis as an option with your doctor. We have a developed a patient questionnaire for you to find out if medical cannabis might be suitable for you.

Ultimately, it is the outcome of your consultation with a specialist that will determine whether medicinal cannabis alone or in conjunction with other therapies is a clinically appropriate option.

If I have tried other formulations, will I be prescribed the same one by an Alternaleaf doctor?

Alternaleaf doctors will prescribe the formulation that will be most beneficial to you, which may not be the product that you have tried before. Your doctor has access to a wide range of formulations and formats, and will derive a treatment plan based on your medical history and personal situation.

What is the cost for appointment with a specialist?

We offer a complementary and obligation-free screening to identify if you are suitable for medical cannabis. Your initial consultation costs $149 and takes around 30min to take your detailed medical history, define a personalised treatment plan and also includes the application of a permit with the TGA for you to access medical cannabis. Thereafter, follow up consults (10-20min) cost $59 to monitor your progress and condition, as well as provide you with repeat scripts - the frequency of consultations is determined by you and the doctor.

My regular doctor is open to prescribing but doesn’t know how. What can I do?

We can help you to talk to your doctor and explain the process. You can complete the quick questionnaire here and provide your doctor details at the end. Alternatively your doctor can reach out to us directly via info@alternaleaf.com.au to request a one-on-one education session with our team.

How much does treatment with medical cannabis cost?

You can expect to pay around $5-10 per day for medication - usage depends on a variety of factors including age, weight and medical history. Medical cannabis is currently not covered by the PBS.

I have used recreational cannabis previously, can I still access medical cannabis?

Yes you can. Many patients use recreational cannabis for pain relief or other symptoms and wish to access a medical-grade product reliably and without the risk of legal repercussions. Our doctors will provide you with an objective treatment recommendation.

Can I drive while being treated with medical cannabis?

The devices used in Roadside drug testing can detect THC for days after use. Your doctor will advise that you generally should not drive while being treated with medical cannabis. There are CBD only products, which do not contain any THC and might be suitable for your condition. Your doctor will take your personal requirements into consideration, when defining your treatment plan.
